Each drive is equipped with a minimum cache of 64MB and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, both of which help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers. The array itself is equipped with two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports and one 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 port, each of which use USB Type-C connectivity. For those whose system does not have a USB Type-C port, the 12big is compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 via an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter cable.

The 12big supports a variety of hardware-controlled RAID modes, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and 50, each of which offers speed, data redundancy, or a combination of both. The LaCie 28TB 2big Dock 2-Bay RAID Array Thunderbolt 3 is an incredibly powerful and versatile Thunderbolt 3 docking station, restoring many of the ports and connectivity removed from modern day laptops. This dock delivers a storage capacity of 28TB, comprised of two 14TB Seagate IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" enterprise-class hard drives.

While the 2big is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12, it comes formatted as HFS+ for Mac, and is configured as hardware-controlled RAID 0, which provides performance gains, but no data redundancy. Also supported is RAID 1 and JBOD.
